Position: Career Accelerator Program Advisor

Job Overview: 

The FIU Global First Year seeks an Advisor to manage our exciting new Career Accelerator Program (CAP) initiative for our partner students enrolled at FIU. The CAP Advisor will work closely with our campus leadership teams and university partners to manage the launch of CAP. The CAP Advisor will also work directly with students, pairing them with local internship opportunities, and will serve as a local contact to nurture employer relationships and promote the employer organizations to students. Essential duties include conducting one-on-one career coaching appointments; teaching educational workshops, presentations, and career-related courses; coordinating career outreach programs and events; and working on special projects that address the career development needs of our students.

Successful candidates will be skilled team players who can successfully lead the establishment of enriching internship experiences for international students, including accountability for career coaching, advising, and program development. A main responsibility of this role will be to work with partner leadership teams to ensure all concepts and details for the Career Accelerator Program and subsequent internship experiences are agreed upon. The CAP Advisor must be a dynamic, self-starter who is motivated by the challenge of managing a new initiative.

The start date for this position is January 1st, 2016

Key Responsibilities:

    • Primary duty of the position is to assist students in navigating the career development, planning, and implementation process by leading students through the Career Accelerator Program
    • Utilize discretion and independent judgment while working with confidential and sensitive student information during the career orientation, program adoption, and career coaching process
    • Design, present, and/or coordinate career-related workshops and classroom presentations
    • Instruct and guide students on how to reflect on previous experiences, make career-related decisions, and help increase career-related self-efficacy in all students
    • Ensure student preparedness for participation in educational internships
    • Lead information sessions and opt-in processing for CAP
    • Coordinate with Career Services to:

    o   Conduct Career Exploration Series events

    o   Track participation and contact of students

    • Conduct Progress and Coaching Sessions
    • Manage Career Accelerator Program materials:

    o   Student profiles

    o   Advising forms

    o   CAP Advisor handbook

    o   Program collateral

    o   Reference materials

    o   CAP website

    o   External website/application license information

    • Take overall responsibility for guaranteed internship placements for students who meet internship criteria
    • Secure new internship opportunities to develop and implement long-term partnerships
    • Connect with campus leadership teams, key university-partner staff, and Shorelight Education colleagues to establish trust
    • Liaise with university career services divisions, ensuring that existing services are leveraged and integrated and there is a strong relationship between all career development resources for students
    • Manage internship logistics and resolve workplace issues
    • Ensure that employer relationships and internship opportunities adhere to the high standards of FIU’s Global First Year and FIU , and work to continuously improve the Career Accelerator Program and the internship experience

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree or completion of degree by time of hire in psychology, education, career counseling or a related discipline
  • Experience working with international students and demonstrated cross-cultural awareness and understanding
  • Experience in career services and experiential education strongly preferred
  • Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by application materials
  • One year of teaching, training, or group facilitation experience
  • Outstanding verbal communication skills
  • Organizational and long-range planning skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Excellent time management, project management, prioritization, and organizational skills
  • High energy level, confident and optimistic demeanor, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Results focus and strong management skills
  • Ability to publicly represent FIU’s Global First Year at events and seminars
  • Demonstrated exceptional presentation and negotiation skills
