Cumulative Grade Point Average

Honors College students are required to maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.3 (reviewed annually). First-, second-, third- and fourth-year students whose cumulative grade point average falls below 3.0 will be dismissed from the College. First and second year students with a grade point average between 3.0 and 3.29 will be placed on probation for one year, and are required to achieve a 3.3 by the end of the academic year (summer) in order to be promoted to the succeeding year. Third year students must achieve a 3.3 grade point average in order to be promoted to the 4th year. Only graduating seniors with a grade point average of 3.3 or higher will graduate through The Honors College and be so recognized at commencement ceremonies.

Honors Course Grades

At Florida International University, the lowest possible passing grade for undergraduate courses (excluding core requirements) is D-. Honors College students who receive a failing grade (F) in the first half of the Honors course (fall) may be enrolled in the second half (spring). However, as Honors courses are year-round (beginning in the fall and continuing in the spring) it is important that students earn a passing grade in both halves of the course. Therefore students who have failed part of the course will be required to repeat that part of the course during the following academic year. Upon consultation with the instructor, The Honors College may choose to dismiss the student from The Honors College.

Students with less than a 3.3 grade point average or who have failed the Honors course are encouraged to meet with Assistant Dean Sharon Placide.

Special consideration will be given to students with extenuating circumstances. Such students should submit an appeal of these policies to:

All appeals must be in writing and must include appropriate documentation.
