Abstract: This session explores how aesthetics is a gateway to research through a semester-long project on aesthetic expressions of authority and values in Mediterranean culture, which combined formal research with artistic expression. Also explored in the session is the interpretation of “left-brain vs. right-brain” concepts of artistic expression.

The 2004 Student Abstract Art Exhibit & Symposium Dinner

Each year the Mediterranean Culture Course concludes with a Student Exhibition of abstract art, followed by a Symposium Dinner on the Honors College Loggia.

Reading in the Odeon Theater at Pompeii ~ May 10th, 2004

Honors College Italy Program Student Annette Shumway delivers a reading from Letters to Pliny in the Odeon Theater in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. Students and tourists listen to Robert Salom's essay from the Letters to Pliny book published as part of Prof. Kneski's Mediterranean Course.

Honors College Mediterranean AVA Students in Italy

The FIU Honors College Italy Summer Program is a four week interdisciplinary study-travel experience that is open to all FIU Honors College students who may use the courses to complete one year of FIU Honors College requirements. The program takes a limited number of participants to four centers of investigation on this academic program: Rome, Florence, Sorrento, and Padua.

The 2003 Student Abstract Art Exhibit

This project is the end of year assignment for the course and follows lectures and research on major artists and art movements of the Mediterranean as one segment of the course. All works of art were presented framed and accompanied by an analytical essay on the aesthetic interpretation of the subject matter.
