MIAMI (September 8, 2009) – The Honors College at Florida International University presents the first of its three colloquia series for the fall semester, beginning with FIU Journalism and Mass Communications Associate Professor Jane Daugherty's lecture titled "TMI, NEN" (Too Much Information, Not Enough News). The colloquium will take place on Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at the Academic One Building room 194 on Biscayne Bay Campus from 3:30pm to 4:45pm.
For the lecture, Professor Daugherty will discuss her most recent research on how students obtain news and keep up to date with today's current events. "Today's news industry is an ever-changing environment and it's important that we keep on top of what is relevant and filter out the excessive information (and disinformation). News is relevant and crucial to all citizens living in a democracy and we need to find the best way to sort through the noise and clutter," said Daugherty.
The Honors College presents two to three lecture programs each semester as part of its colloquia series on both FIU campuses. Prominent scholars address the Honors College and FIU community throughout the academic year.
Professor Daugherty teaches online journalism, communications law and ethics, print news reporting, data-based reporting and research methods. A newspaper investigative reporter and editor for nearly 30 years, she was named a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1994 and was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard. She is a four-time winner of the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for coverage of the disadvantaged and recipient of numerous other national journalism awards. Just before joining the FIU faculty full-time in 2004, she was named Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Lesbian and Gay Journalists for her professional contributions at The Miami Herald, Detroit Free Press, Austin American-Statesman, St. Petersburg Times and The Palm Beach Post.
The Honors College at Florida International University is a center of excellence dedicated to the education of a special community of exceptional students representing all majors.
