
Honors College Dean Emeritus Fernando González-Reigosa
MIAMI (November 15, 2006)– Fernando González-Reigosa has been appointed Dean Emeritus of the Honors College by Florida International University President Modesto Maidique. Dr. González-Reigosa is a member of FIU's founding faculty and the former Dean of Undergraduate Studies. While Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Dr. González-Reigosa oversaw the creation and development of The Honors College (HC), from its inception as a program in 1990 to a full-fledged academic college in 1997. At that time, he was named the first Dean of The Honors College.
Dr. Gonzalez-Reigosa was instrumental in creating the current curriculum which has been recognized by other Honors Colleges across the country. He also founded and directed the Honors College study aboard program to Spain. This program has provided over one hundred Honors College students the opportunity to immerse themselves in Spanish culture. Under his leadership, the College also established one of FIU’s first living and learning communities in the residence halls called Honors Place.
Honors College Interim Dean Lesley A. Northup praised her predecessor, acknowledging
"Fernando has made many valuable contributions to the development of FIU. The creation of the Honors College is a product of his leadership, vision, and passion for excellence in education."
Dr. Gonzalez-Reigosa has been an integral part of many programmatic and academic initiatives at Florida International University, including the National Student Exchange, the Journal for the Art of Teaching, the core undergraduate curriculum, and the Miami Film Festival. In addition, he is the founder of the FIU Hispanic Faculty Association and the Hispanic Psychological Association of South Florida. Dr. Gonzalez-Reigosa is widely published and has lectured throughout the U.S. and in Europe and South America. He earned his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Puerto Rico, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Florida State University. He recently retired from his latest role as Director of FIU's Initiatives in Spain and is currently residing in Madrid, Spain.
