Course Description
This course will examine Eastern and Western Gardens through the ages to evaluate how philosophical and cultural trends changed the structure and use of gardens from sacred to secular. Although the content is organized chronologically, a multi-perspective approach will be used to critically examine the diversity and interrelation affecting garden design and use in Italy and Japan. Awareness of contemporary social concerns will be highlighted by examining and evaluating how traditional design influence the present gardens.
