Course Description

Pedagogically, this course exposes students to a wide range of ideas, narratives, ideologies, and practices about African sexualities from disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Students will learn about how African and colonial medicines shaped conflicting notions of sexualities on the continent. They will read creative works such as novels, and interpret visual arts and material culture to retrace the past and present social, legal, political, and economic ideas and ideologies about African sexualities from the precolonial times. This course places sexuality at the center of the African experience. From films about African LGBTQ and documentaries about global African sex work to music videos and comedy skits, the course promises to equip students with the skills to articulate complex ideas about the African experience of sexualities from the precolonial era to the third decade of the 21st century.
