Deconstructing Race Power & White Privilege in America

This course will explore the phenomena of race, class, oppression, power, and privilege. Students will critically analyze their own identities within the context of power, privilege, and inequity. Through the course lectures, required readings, films/clips, and discussions, students will also critically examine and describe the social, political, and historical construction of inequality while recognizing structures of power and privilege in the U.S.

This course analyzes the root and development of three of the most common terms used to describe cultural and/or racial mixing or blending and uses them as a starting point to examine the performance and literature about the experience of the "third" or liminal spaces. You will learn about these three distinct terms for mixed cultural expressions and what they mean in a series of fields like sociology, psychology, religion, gender studies, ethnography, performance and the arts, to name a few.

Other Worlds and the Age of Wonder: Required Readings for Future I

In Future Shock, Alvin Toffler argued for the study of science fiction as a means of leading “young minds through an imaginative exploration of the jungle of political, social, psychological, and ethical issues that will confront” them in the future. This course explores the ways in which alternate worlds and futuristic times are imagined, and how these visions at once radically transform our models of reality and identity and prepare us to confront such radical transformations.

Workers Without Borders: Negotiating Family & Identity

In this course, we will examine the conditions that drive migrant workers to the United States as well as their experience in the country and how it informs their concepts of identity and self. The course is intentionally interdisciplinary and will incorporate debates from history, sociology, anthropology, public policy, and more. We will not be limiting our explorations to the United States as this class will incorporate a collaborative online international learning (COIL) component. Students will work directly with their peers at a university in another country on a project related to the class content.
