Graphic Voices

We will read and discuss graphic works ranging from the graphic novel, to outsider artist comics, and including coloring books, to discover the potential of this language to disseminate important stories and historic, social, psychological, artistic or scientific content. This visual communication form gives a platform to tales and truths otherwise lost or unshared. We will find stories of events we might think we know but will find deeper understanding through this powerful medium. Even the books we read, about creating comics, will be in comic form. Therefore, all assignments will be done in the language of the graphic/comic or coloring book. And finally, individuals or groups within the class will produce a printed book by the end of the semester. No previous skill necessary.

My Immortal Life: How to Live Forever

What would happen if we could live forever? Would we achieve the things we thought were impossible because time was our biggest limitation? Would humanity be improved for the better? In this course, we will discuss what it means for humans to be immortal, if it is possible, and the repercussions of immortality on humankind. We will discuss the capacities of technologies, machines and theories that may make immortality an option for humans in the future. We will discuss the impact that immortality might have on our meaning of life and a human's purpose. We will discuss our human nature, biologically, psychologically and culturally, in an attempt to determine if immortality truly is possible and what affects it will have on the way we interact with one another.

Westworld

This course is an interdisciplinary adventure in Westworld. Our core material is the first season of the television series created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy (2016), a tapestry of science fiction, philosophy, narratology, and machine learning. Our course’s overarching question is What is the difference between the park’s hosts (androids) and guests (humans)? Over the course of the semester we hope students will come to realize that this difference is not nearly as large, solid, or obvious as may appear. Since we are indeed comparing, the theme of the course is fungibility and to learn about this theme we will study the philosophy of analogy. By exploring the interchangeability of human and android, students will face the murky ethics that potentially permeate advances in machine learning. Though in reality we are nowhere near creating artificial consciousness (and some say we will never get there), the speculative exercises this course offers are invaluable to students’ understanding of themselves, each other, and the increasingly complex ecosystem of our world.
