Alejandro Uriarte’s aspiration to become a Pediatric Cardiologist is rooted in his childhood experiences in Cuba, where healthcare resources were scarce. Still, the dedication of physicians like his uncle left a lasting impression. His experiences with Acute Gastritis at a young age gave him a unique perspective on the role of a physician—one who gives their best in even the most challenging circumstances. Alejandro is driven by a desire to change lives through compassionate care, and he looks forward to working in an environment where he can access the resources and support that were not available to the doctors he admired growing up.
For Sarah Khoury, the human body has always been a source of fascination. Her path toward a medical career was solidified when she witnessed the life-saving work of a physician who saved her father during a cardiac arrest. This moment, along with her own experiences as a patient, inspired Sarah to pursue a career in healthcare, where she aims to provide the same sense of hope and relief to others. Sarah aspires to specialize in Interventional Radiology or Dermatology, where she can perform life-changing procedures and restore the hope of patients facing debilitating conditions.
Thao Nguyen’s interest in medicine began with her connection to heart disease through her father’s health challenges. Watching her father manage high blood pressure and high cholesterol, Thao became inspired to pursue a career as a Cardiac Surgeon. She hopes to raise awareness about heart disease, its prevention, and the potential for life-saving interventions through surgery. Motivated by her experiences caring for her father, Thao is determined to make a difference in the lives of those affected by heart conditions, offering both education and advanced medical care.

Arlyn Cuan aims to become a physician who excels in patient care while driving advancements in medicine through research, education, and mentorship. Growing up without clear role models, Arlyn proactively sought mentors and guidance, shaping her journey toward medicine. Her passion for medicine stems from its unique blend of science and human experience, where every patient’s story plays a crucial role in effective care. Arlyn’s hands-on experience in emergency rooms and free clinics highlighted the disparities in healthcare access, while her research into health disparities and neurological conditions reinforced her determination to bridge the gap between medical research and clinical practice. Arlyn sees FIU as not just a stepping stone but a community that has nurtured her growth. She is committed to continuing her journey at FIU’s College of Medicine, where she hopes to push the boundaries of science, advocate for patients, and mentor future generations of physicians.
