Maintaining Honors Status
Honors students are encouraged to meet with an Honors advisor at least once per academic year, to navigate Honors requirements and maximize their Honors experience!
Honors students must meet certain requirements to remain in good standing with the Honors College. These include:
- Maintain cumulative FIU GPA of a 3.3 or greater. If not maintained, Honors students will be placed on Honors Probation.
- Honors students must also maintain a 3.0 IDH/Honors College GPA
2. Earn a passing grade in all Honors/IDH courses (C or above).
- Students who earn a non-passing grade of a D, F, F0, or NC in an IDH course will be automatically dismissed from the Honors College.
- Honors IDH courses cannot be retaken for grade forgiveness
- Students who earn an IN grade have two semesters from the time the IN grade was given to earn a grade in the course. It is up to the student to stay in communication with the professor to ensure all necessary coursework is completed. More details on IN grades can be found here: https://policies.fiu.edu/files/767.pdf
3. Continuous enrollment in Honors College coursework until their academic requirements are met (4 upper division Honors courses completed):
- Students inactive in the Honors College for over 3 semesters will be discontinued from the Honors College. For example, if your last Honors IDH class was taken Fall 2024, you must take an Honors IDH course by Fall 2025.
- Students participating in FIU (non-Honors) Study Abroad must confer with Honors Academic Advisor to discuss Honors/IDH course enrollment plan.
- Students cannot enroll into 2 Honors courses in the same semester (IDH 1931 and IDH 1001/3034 is the exception). If an Honors student is enrolled into 2 Honors courses, Honors advising will reach out and ask which section they would like to be dropped from. If we do not receive a reply, one section will be dropped at random.
- Summer options are available but limited. Only 1 Honors course can be taken during the Summer semester.
4. Students who drop (DR) an Honors course are automatically dropping out of the Honors College. Exceptions may be made under extenuating circumstances, but the drop must be approved by an Honors Advisor prior to the course being dropped.
5. Maintain active Engagement in the Honors College as per the Honors Engagement Requirement: https://honors.fiu.edu/engagement-and-service/
6. New students MUST enroll in an Honors seminar in their first semester in the Honors College; failure to enroll will result in the rescinding of their admission.
7. To be eligible to participate in Honors College Study Abroad IDH4007 & IDH4008:
- Student must be in good academic standing with FIU and Honors College
- Participation must not extend expected graduation semester (FTIC- 4-year graduation, TRF- 2 year graduation)
- Participation must not incur Excess credit surcharge
Honors Probation, Dismissal, and Reinstatement
Honors Probation
- If an Honors student falls below a 3.3 cumulative FIU GPA, they will be placed on Honors Academic Probation. Once placed, they will receive an email communication indicating they have 3 semesters to raise their cumulative FIU GPA to a 3.3 or above. After 3 semesters, if the Honors student remains below a 3.3 cumulative FIU GPA, they will be dismissed from the Honors College. If they are above the 3.3 cumulative FIU GPA, they will be removed from Honors Probation.
- If a student falls below a 3.3 cumulative FIU GPA and were already placed on Honors probation previously, they will automatically be dismissed from the Honors College. Honors students may only proceed through the Honors Probation cycle once.
Honors Dismissal
Honors students will be dismissed from Honors College for any one of the following reasons listed below:
- Non-passing grade in an Honors course (D, F, F0, NC, or DR)
- If a student on Honors Probation does not raise their cumulative FIU GPA to a 3.3 by the required semester.
- If a student’s cumulative FIU GPA falls below a 3.3 for a second time after previously being placed on Honors Probation.
Honors students who plan to use grade forgiveness must submit their grade forgiveness form for non-IDH course(s) within 10 days of their dismissal and reach out to hcadvising@fiu.edu for reinstatement consideration. The class taken for grade forgiveness must already be completed at the time of dismissal.
Honors College Reinstatement
Honors College will only consider, not guarantee, reinstatement if extenuating circumstances are involved. These extenuating circumstances include:
- Death of a student or immediate family member (parent, spouse, child, sibling, or grandparents).
- Call to active military service.
- Illness of student of such severity or duration to preclude completion of courses.
If one of these extenuating circumstances pertains to you, you will need to complete the following steps to be considered for reinstatement:
- Reach out to the Honors College regarding interest in potential reinstatement. Students must reach out to the Honors Advising team at hcadvising@fiu.edu within 10 business days of their notification of dismissal.
- Submit a Student Petition. Steps on how to submit them and what a petition entails can be found here (https://onestop.fiu.edu/classes/student-petitions/)
- Once submitted, reach out to Honors Advising at hcadvising@fiu.edu to let us know the form was submitted.
- If the student petition is approved, you will need to follow up with Honors Advising at hcadvising@fiu.edu indicating that it has been approved (within 10 days of approval by OneStop)
- The Honors Advising team will review your progress, expected graduation date, and excess credits to determine if reinstatement is still possible to ensure Honors College courses will not delay expected graduation. Honors College reinstatement is not guaranteed even if a student petition is approved.
- Once reviewed, the Honors Advising team will inform you of whether your Honors College Reinstatement request was approved along with any conditions to the reinstatement.
If reinstated, Honors students cannot go through the reinstatement process a second time.
