Course Description
Living in this century, it is pretty clear that, as a species, we have some pretty big problems. Some of these problems are so big, in fact, that they may threaten the continued survival and success of homo sapiens. Thinking about problems that may doom our species can be a serious downer. Instead, in this course we will take a careful, analytical look at a series of problems that are massive, and think towards their solutions. As Honors students, we are the leaders, thinkers, and problem solvers. If we put our heads together, we may well have a chance at solving some of the biggest threats that humanity currently faces. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the interrelatedness of local, global, international, and intercultural issues, trends, and systems.
How will this course help you succeed? In learning about large problems, you will think from a variety of perspectives, through multiple levels of analysis, and using analytical tools from myriad disciplines. In effect, I am asking you learn how to think, read, and write with complexity. The ability to live with and adapt to complexity is a necessary skill for you to thrive in our complex world.
Through this course, you will develop a deeper understanding of:
• Multi-perspective analysis of large issues
• The interconnectedness of issues shared across borders and boundaries
• Solutions to major global problems
• The analytical writing process
