Anel Velasquez, a proud alumna of the FIU Honors College, has embarked on a remarkable journey since graduating in 2022. Transitioning into a fulfilling career as a 5th-grade English Language Arts/ESOL teacher for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Anel’s experience in the Honors College equipped her with the flexibility, creativity, and problem-solving skills necessary to thrive in her role. Anel specifically credits Honors Professors Cinthya Rojas, Maikel Right, and Ruben Garrote, for their invaluable knowledge and mentorship that have contributed significantly to her personal and professional development.

Her commitment to student success is evident through accolades such as being voted Rookie Teacher of the Year in her first year, where she has made significant strides in helping newcomer students adapt and excel in their English proficiency exams. Beyond her teaching duties, Anel’s passion for education extends into her pursuit of a Master’s degree in Reading Education at the University of Florida, a testament to her dedication to lifelong learning and professional growth.
