Biography

Dr. Walter J. Maldonado, a luminary in higher education, currently serves as the Associate Director of Information Technology for the Office of Academic Advising Technology, a role that underscores his leadership and influence in the field. With over 23 years of dedicated service, Dr. Maldonado brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his position. A Florida International University (FIU) graduate, he holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, a Master of Science in Higher Education, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education. His academic journey reflects an interdisciplinary approach to education, combining technical proficiency with a deep understanding of the complexities involved in student development and success—a passion that drives him.

Throughout his successful career, Dr. Maldonado has excelled in administrative roles and made significant contributions as an educator. He has taught essential courses, including SLS 1501—First-Year Experience, SLS 1402—Discover Your Major, SLS 1510—Strategies for Success, IDH 1931—Honors Introduction and Leadership, IDH 1001—Honors Seminar I, and IDH 1002—Honors Seminar II. In these roles, he has been instrumental in shaping countless students' academic and personal journeys, showcasing his unwavering commitment to their success.

Dr. Maldonado's doctoral thesis, a groundbreaking study on the impact of Alternative Break programs on students' behavioral and skill development, highlights his commitment to understanding and enhancing the student experience beyond traditional classroom settings. His research can potentially transform student development strategies and demonstrates a commitment to promoting holistic growth. Dr. Maldonado is passionate about philanthropy, service-learning, and student advocacy outside of academia. He believes in the transformative power of education and is committed to helping students discover their interests and develop the skills that will lead to success academically, personally, and professionally.
