Curriculum

Honors students pursue any major in the university while simultaneously completing an independent Honors College curriculum.

The first year addresses epistemology and ontology while stressing multi-disciplinary approaches to solving intellectual and practical problems. Students must additionally complete four courses from years two through four to graduate from the Honors College.

Honors course equivalencies vary based on major and how far into your academic career you are, so please refer to the list below for details on finding Honors-equivalent courses.

Year One (For New Freshmen Only)

Students must plan their Spring schedule around taking IDH1002, which will be the same days and times as their IDH1001 course during the Fall semester.

  • IDH1931

IDH1931: Honors Introduction (1 credit, Fall only)

  • IDH1001

IDH1001: Honors Seminar I: The Origin of Ideas and the Idea of Origins (3 credits, Fall only)

  • IDH1002

IDH1002: Honors Seminar II (3 credits, Spring only)

Years Two through Four

Honors courses fulfill many requirements for UCC and degree programs. Browse the list of equivalencies to see where our courses fit into your academic journey. Students must complete four courses from a combination of Options 1 through 4.

  • Option 1: Honors Seminars
    • IDH2003: Honors Seminar III: Inhabiting Other Lives (3 credits, Global Learning course)
    • IDH2004: Honors Seminar IV (3 credits, Global Learning course)
    • IDH3034: Honors Seminar V: Aesthetics, Values, and Authority (3 credits, Global Learning course, may be repeated)
    • IDH3035: Honors Seminar VI (3 credits, Global Learning course, may be repeated)

For a full list of this year’s courses, browse our Honors Course List.

IDH3034 and IDH3035 are repeatable, but students must choose a different section and topic for each combination of courses.

Summer options are available but limited. Only one Honors course may be taken during the Summer semester.

Engineering students may take IDH2003 and IDH2004 to replace an Upper Division option. Honors Advising will contact you if you are eligible for the course. If you are not contacted, you are not eligible for the course.

Engineering, Computing, Nursing and Architecture students must meet with an Honors College advisor as soon as possible in their first semester to discuss Upper Division course options and overall trajectory.

  • Option 2: Study Abroad
    • IDH4007: Honors Seminar VII (3 credits)
    • IDH4008: Honors Seminar VIII (3 credits)

Students may choose to complete their Honors curriculum through an Honors College Study Abroad program. Students take a pre-travel, three-credit preparatory course. The student will then earn the remaining three credits of Honors during an international experience abroad that goes well beyond cultural tourism.

For more information, browse our Honors Study Abroad programs.

  • Option 3: Advanced Research and Creativity in Honors (ARCH)
    • IDH4905: Honors Independent Study (0-3 credits, may be repeated multiple semesters)

The Advanced Research and Creativity in Honors (ARCH) program pairs students and faculty for cutting-edge research. Students must present their research at the annual Undergraduate Research Conference at FIU (URFIU) in the spring.

    Departmental Honors Thesis

Department Honors courses, Honors thesis, and/or capstone courses can be part of ARCH, with the proviso that students register their project with ARCH and present their work at the URFIU conference in spring.

  • Option 4: Honors College Internship
    • IDH3940: Honors College Internship (3 credits, may only be taken once)

Students may choose to complete the Honors curriculum by participating in an internship. This structured practical training/work experience must be approved by the Honors College for course credit.

In addition, international students must complete the Curricular Practical Training (CPT) application process through International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS).

Approval to enroll is not guaranteed. The internship and GPA will be considered. For international students, approval can still be denied by ISSS.

To apply to enroll in IDH 3940, please fill out our IDH 3940 Application Request.
