Maintaining Honors Status

Honors College students must meet certain requirements to remain in good standing. These requirements include GPA, good performance in Honors courses and maintaining an active role in the Honors College.

Failure to maintain GPA requirements or other Honors College policies may result in Honors Probation or Dismissal from the Honors College.

In select circumstances, the Honors College may consider you for reinstatement after your dismissal.

  • Honors Status Requirements
    • A cumulative FIU GPA of at least 3.3 and an Honors College (IDH courses) GPA of at least 3.0.
    • A passing grade of C or above in Honors (IDH) courses. If you earn a non-passing grade (D, F, F0 or NC), you will be automatically dismissed from the Honors College.
      • Honors courses are not eligible for grade forgiveness.
      • If you earn an IN grade, you have two semesters to resolve the IN and earn a grade in the course. More details on IN grades can be found on FIU OneStop.
    • Continuous enrollment in Honors coursework until you have completed four upper-division Honors courses.
      • If inactive in the Honors College for more than three semesters, you will be discontinued. For example, if your last Honors IDH class was taken in Fall 2024, you must take another by Fall 2025.
      • If you are participating in a non-Honors Study Abroad program, you must confer with your Honors advisor to discuss a course enrollment plan.
      • Summer options are available, but limited. Only one Honors course may be taken during Summer.
    • You cannot enroll in two Honors courses in the same semester. If you do, Honors advising will reach out and ask which section you would like to be dropped from. If a reply is not received, one section will be dropped at random.
    • If you drop (DR) an Honors course, you are automatically dropped out of the Honors College. Exceptions may be made under extenuating circumstances, but the drop must be approved by an Honors Advisor prior to the course being dropped.
    • Active Honors Engagement and Service.
    • Enroll in an Honors seminar in your first semester at the Honors College. Failure to enroll will result in the rescinding of your Honors admission.
  • Probation

If you fall below a 3.3 cumulative FIU GPA, you will be placed on Honors Academic Probation. Once placed, you will receive an email communication indicating you have three semesters to raise their cumulative FIU GPA to a 3.3 or above.

After three semesters, if your cumulative FIU GPA is still below 3.3, you will be dismissed from the Honors College. If you are above the 3.3 cumulative FIU GPA, you will be removed from Honors Probation.

If you fall below a 3.3 cumulative FIU GPA and have been placed on Honors Probation previously, you will be automatically dismissed from the Honors College. You may only proceed through Honors Probation once.

  • Dismissal

You will be dismissed from the Honors College for any one of the following reasons:

    • Earning a non-passing grade in an Honors course (D, F, F0, NC, or DR)
    • If you are on Honors Probation and do not raise your cumulative FIU GPA to a 3.3 by the required semester.
    • If your cumulative FIU GPA falls below a 3.3 for a second time after previously being placed on Honors Probation.

If you plan to use grade forgiveness, you must submit your grade forgiveness form for non-IDH course(s) within 10 days of their dismissal and reach out to hcadvising@fiu.edu for reinstatement consideration. The class taken for grade forgiveness must already be completed at the time of dismissal.

  • Reinstatement

Honors College will only consider, not guarantee, reinstatement if extenuating circumstances are involved. These extenuating circumstances include:

    • Death of a student or immediate family member (parent, spouse, child, sibling, or grandparents)
    • Call to active military service
    • Illness of student of such severity or duration to preclude completion of courses

If one of these extenuating circumstances pertains to you, you will need to complete the following steps to be considered for reinstatement:

    1. Reach out to the Honors College regarding interest in potential reinstatement. You must reach out to the Honors Advising team at hcadvising@fiu.edu within 10 business days of your notification of dismissal.
    2. Submit a Student Petition. Details on how to submit them and what a petition entails can be found on the OneStop Student Petition page.
    3. Once submitted, reach out to Honors Advising at hcadvising@fiu.edu to let us know the form was submitted.
    4. If the student petition is approved, you will need to follow up with Honors Advising at hcadvising@fiu.edu indicating that the petition has been approved (within 10 days of approval by OneStop).
    5. The Honors Advising team will review your progress, expected graduation date, and excess credits to determine if reinstatement is still possible to ensure Honors College courses will not delay expected graduation. Honors College reinstatement is not guaranteed even if a student petition is approved.
    6. Once reviewed, the Honors Advising team will inform you of whether your Honors College Reinstatement request was approved along with any conditions to the reinstatement.

If reinstated to the Honors College, you cannot go through the reinstatement process a second time.
