Course Description

This course explores the essence of Minimalism through Japan’s traditional performing arts—Noh theater, the Way of Tea, and haiku, which expresses the subtleties of nature with the fewest possible words. We will study the simplicity that Japan’s classical arts have carefully preserved for centuries.

Building on this foundation, we will examine Satish Kumar’s Elegant Simplicity and consider ways of living that embody social equity, personal tranquility, and the ecological integrity of the Earth.

Through group activities, including a COIL collaboration with students from Kansai University in Japan, you will also achieve the goals of Global Learning.
