Applying to the Honors College

Depending on your student status, there are different criteria for admission into the Honors College.

Admission Requirements

  • First-year Students

    A first-year student is a high school senior admitted to FIU for the Fall semester. Students admitted in Spring will need to apply during the next Fall semester.

    The FIU Honors College reviews applications during the first and second early decision periods and selects applicants for consideration. If you are chosen for admission into the Honors College, you will receive an invitation during your admission to FIU.

    If you are not awarded a spot in the Honors College with your admission to FIU, you may be eligible to apply to the Honors College after you are admitted to FIU if you have:

    • A weighted GPA of at least 3.7, as calculated by FIU.
    • A minimum SAT score of 1230; ACT score of 26; or CLT score of 86.
  • Transfer Students

    A transfer student is a student admitted for Summer or Fall who is attending or has attended a college or university after graduating high school. You must have at least two years remaining in your program of study. Those admitted to Spring will need to apply during the following Fall admission cycle.

    Transfer students have two pathways for admission into the Honors College, with their own requirements:

    Pathway I

    • A weighted GPA of at least 3.5, as calculated by FIU
    • 12 college credits (not including accelerated mechanisms)
    • Two full academic years remaining in your program of study
    • Personal statement and resumé (see below for a description)

    Pathway II

    • A weighted GPA of at least 3.8, as calculated by FIU
    • An earned AA degree from a Florida College System institution (and posted at FIU)
    • Two full academic years remaining in your program of study
    • Students will be notified of admission on initial release dates
  • Current FIU Students

    Degree-seeking students currently enrolled at FIU with at least two years remaining in their program of study may apply to the Honors College. This category may include students admitted in Spring.

    Current FIU students have two pathways for admission into the Honors College, with their own requirements:

    Pathway I

    • A weighted GPA of at least 3.5, as calculated by FIU
    • 12 FIU credits (not including accelerated mechanisms)
    • Two full academic years remaining in your program of study
    • Making progress toward timely graduation
    • Personal statement and résumé (see below for a description)

    Pathway II

    • A weighted GPA of at least 3.8, as calculated by FIU
    • 12 FIU credits (not including accelerated mechanisms)
    • Two full academic years remaining in your program of study
    • Making progress toward timely graduation

How to Apply

  1. Access the application through your MyFIU portal at my.fiu.edu. Make sure to use the same Panther ID and password provided to you when you applied to FIU.
  2. Under Admissions, click Apply to the Honors College in the left sidebar. If you do not see the link, it may be because your weighted GPA or test scores do not meet the minimum requirements for admission.
  3. Upload all required documentation.
    1. Personal Statement: 300 to 500 words explaining why you want to join the Honors College and providing specific examples of how FIU Honors can help you achieve your academic and career goals.
    2. Resume: A brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience. No more than one page in length, your resumé should highlight your involvement in activities demonstrating leadership skills, participation in service or commitment to intellectual and creative pursuits.
  4. Submit your application.
