FIU Honor’s College offers many financial resources to help students achieve their full potential while enrolled. We encourage all Honors students to find scholarships that best fit their student profile and academic goals.
Current and First-Time Students
A limited number of exclusive, competitive Honors scholarships are available for current and incoming Honors College students. FIU’s online scholarship application tool, AcademicWorks, will allow you to search and apply for these and other scholarships at FIU.

To start a scholarship application on AcademicWorks:
- Login at Academicworks with your MyAccounts username and password. (You must have already activated your FIU e-mail account and have a Panther ID number)
- Fill out the general scholarship application. AcademicWorks will recommend scholarships for which you may be eligible. For some, you will automatically be entered into the applicant's pool; for others, you may need to answer additional questions.
- To search for the Honors College scholarships (listed below), type “Honors College” in the search tab.
- To be eligible for institutional aid, a student must either be a citizen of the United States, a U.S. lawful permanent resident or an international student on an aid eligible visa. DACA/TPS/Undocumented students without a legal status are not eligible for Federal, State or Institutional Funding.

- Alberto Garcia Marrero First Generation Honor College Scholarship
This scholarship is open to all Honors College students. However, preference will be given to students enrolled in their first year of Honors College and majoring in International Business.
Eligibility
- Entering or current Honors College student with a minimum 3.3 GPA
- In the first generation of their family to complete a college degree (students whose siblings have attained or are pursuing a degree are eligible)
- Resident of the state of Florida
- Enrollment for a minimum of six credit hours per semester
- Have financial need as determined through the FAFSA and be eligible for a Pell Grant
Amount: A one-time award of up to $1,000
Duration: Not automatically renewable; recipient can re-apply
- Bilzin Sumberg Scholarship in Memoriam of Damion Dunn, '05
The scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled in or accepted for admission to the Honors College who has demonstrated leadership ability in extracurricular activities. Preference will be given to a student who is a current or former resident of Jamaica and who intends to pursue a career in law.
Eligibility
- Entering or current Honors College with a minimum 3.3 GPA
- Demonstrated leadership ability in extracurricular activities
- Preferably pre-law
- Scholarship is renewable for an additional three years if he or she maintains a 3.2 GPA.

- Carlos M. Castellon First Generation Scholarship
Eligibility
- Entering or current Honors College student with a minimum 3.3 GPA
- In the first generation of their family to complete a college degree (students whose siblings have attained or are pursuing a degree are eligible);
- Preferably, a student pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, with a major in Accounting.
Amount: A one-time award of up to $2,000
Duration: Not automatically renewable; recipient can re-apply
- Dean’s Advisory Board Scholarship
Scholarships will be awarded to students enrolled in the Honors College, making significant progress in their degree program. Recipients will be chosen principally based on academic performance and financial need, as determined by the dean of the Honors College.
Amount: Up to $5,000 for the Spring semester
Duration: Not automatically renewable; recipient can re-apply
- Elsa Rodriguez Memorial First Generation Scholarship
This scholarship is open to all eligible Honors College students.

Eligibility
- Entering or current Honors College student with a minimum 3.3 GPA
- In the first generation of their family to complete a college degree (students whose siblings have attained or are pursuing a degree are eligible)
- Resident of the state of Florida
- Must be enrolled for a minimum of six credit hours per semester
- Demonstrated financial need by completing the national Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and be eligible for a Pell Grant.
- Applicants must submit an essay sharing their personal experience of what it means to be a first-generation student and their experience as part of an immigrant family.
Amount: Minimum of $5,000 per semester (Fall/Spring)
Duration: Automatic renewal for four years, as funds allow, if recipient:
- Maintains a cumulative 3.3 GPA
- Makes satisfactory progress towards a 4-year bachelor's degree
- Gerald C. Grant, Jr. Scholarship
Eligibility
- Entering or current Honors College student with a minimum 3.3 GPA
- Evidence of motivation, character, and potential
- Preferably of African-American descent

- Harvey L. Young Family Foundation Scholarship
Eligibility
- Entering or current Honors College student with a minimum 3.3 GPA
- Demonstrated financial need in a written statement to the Honors College Scholarship Committee
- Florida residency
- Evidence of motivation, character and potential
Amount: $2,000
Duration: Automatic renewal for four years, as funds allow, if recipient -

- Honorpreneurship Scholarship
Eligibility
- Entering or current Honors College student with a minimum 3.3 GPA
- Open to all majors and tracks, however, preference will be given to students pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration
- Provide copy of an updated resume
- Submit a description of a new startup or new business idea you are planning to pursue. Format is in essay form (max one-page, single space)
Amount: $50
- Jorge and Darlene Perez Scholars Endowment
Eligibility
- Recipients must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and must maintain this GPA to continue to receive this scholarship.
- Recipients must submit an essay about the following: The purpose of the FIU Honors College is to educate, prepare, and motivate tomorrow’s leaders who generate value. What trials did you encounter, and what knowledge did you acquire to generate value? How do you plan to use this talent or value to change South Florida? How do you envision creating a better city and state? How will your FIU education and this scholarship allow you to accomplish your goals and make a difference? How will you give back?
- Recipients must submit a paragraph to the donor at the end of each semester explaining their future leadership potential and updating the donor as to how the scholarship is helping the recipient achieve his or her goals.
- Preference will be given to those with a desire to stay in the South Florida community upon graduation.
- Recipients must be enrolled as full-time, degree seeking Honors College students.
Amount: $10,000 a year
- José Martí First Generation Honors College Scholarship
These scholarships will be awarded to Honors College students in good standing who are Hispanic-American or of Spanish culture with origins in Mexico, South America, Central America, or the Caribbean.
Eligibility
- Neither parent has a college degree
- Resident of the state of Florida
- Enrollment for a minimum of six credit hours per semester
- Have financial need as determined through the FAFSA
Amount: A one-time award of $5,000
Duration: Not automatically renewable; recipient can re-apply
- Lucille E. Snaith Memorial Scholarship Endowment
Eligibility
- Entering or current Honors College student (preference is given to entering freshmen)
- Outstanding academic performance in high school and college
- U.S. citizenship with legal residency in Miami-Dade or Broward County
- Financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office
- Evidence of motivation, good character, leadership potential and community service
Amount: $2,500
Duration: Automatic renewal for three years, as funds allow, if recipient:
- Remains a full-time Honors College student
- Makes satisfactory progress toward a bachelor's degree
- Maintains a 3.3 cumulative GPA
- Pamela Silva First Generation Scholarship
Two Pamela Silva Scholars will be selected for each academic year.
Eligibility
- Entering or current Honors College student with a minimum 3.3 GPA
- Have financial need as determined by the FAFSA
- Enrolled for a minimum of six credit hours per semester
- Preferably majoring in the College of Business or the School of Journalism and Mass Communications
- Two letters of recommendation
- A two-page typewritten (double-spaced) essay about your career goals, reasons for choosing the profession and where you would like to work in the future.
Amount: $2,000
- The Prospanica SFL Honors College Award
Prospanica SFL is partnering with the Honors College in developing a real-life case study for students at the FIU Honors College.
Eligibility
- Currently attending Florida International University Honors College
- Student is pursuing a Business degree
- Provide copy of an updated resume
- Be a citizen of the United States, a U.S. lawful permanent resident or an international student with intention of receiving the F-1 visa to study in the United States
You are to select a local business, preferably predominantly Hispanic-owned or Hispanic-facing with whom to work with. Information about this firm is to be included in a cover letter or introduction to your case. The cover letter should contain the name and contact information of the person within the firm. Prospanica South Florida reserves the right to contact this business to confirm participation in the Case Competition.
Choose one of these three Focus Areas for your recommendation(s), given your choice of a local, preferably Hispanic firm, with whom to work. Write your recommendations in a concise manner and no longer than one page.
- Your firm wants to expand to another location within the next five years; make a recommendation on what makes a great location for this business and highlight some potential areas within the greater South Florida area.
- Develop new marketing ideas to promote your firm’s services including, but not limited to, social media, rewards and online campaigns
- Creating a Management Structure for the Owner’s transition from Employee to Manager: How would you recommend to the owner to stop doing the day-to-day activities and start leading a highly efficient team?
- How do you recommend your firm transition more fully into the business environment caused by COVID-19?

- Rogelio B. Figueroa and Aracely M. Figueroa Scholarship Endowment
Eligibility
- Entering or current Honors College student with a minimum 3.3 GPA
- Preferably a student pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, with a major in Accounting or Finance.
- If no student meets the above criteria, it may be awarded to students seeking a degree in the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs.
Amount: $1,000
Duration: Automatic renewal for four years, as funds allow, if recipient:
- Remains a full-time Honors College Student
- Makes satisfactory progress toward a bachelor’s degree
- Maintains a 3.3 cumulative GPA
- Ruth Andrade-Jose Alberto Maldonado Zavala First Generation Honors College Scholarship
This scholarship is open to all eligible Honors College students. However, preference will be given to students who are planning on pursuing a degree in computer science or engineering.

- Entering or current Honors College student with a minimum 3.3 GPA
- In the first generation of their family to complete a college degree (students whose siblings have attained or are pursuing a degree are eligible)
- Resident of the state of Florida
- Enrollment for a minimum of six credit hours per semester
- Have financial need as determined through the FAFSA and be eligible for a Pell Grant
- Preference will be given to first generation freshmen students

- Sarah R. Gaylord First Generation Scholarship
Eligibility
- Entering or current Honors College student with a minimum 3.3 GPA

- Have financial need as determined by the FAFSA
Amount: $10,000 per academic year

- Enrolls in a minimum of six credit hours per semester (Fall and Spring)

- Sheri Anne Graham Memorial Scholarship
Eligibility
- Entering Honors College freshman with a high school GPA of 3.5 or greater;
- Demonstrate financial need in a written statement to the Honors College Scholarship Committee;
- U.S. citizen and resident of Miami-Dade County;
- Intend to major in “arts and sciences” (i.e. any major in the physical sciences, social sciences, liberal studies, or the fine and performing arts)

- Remains a full-time degree-seeking Honors College student
- Makes satisfactory progress toward a bachelor’s degree
- Maintains a 3.3 cumulative GPA
- Swietelsky Family First Generation Honors College Scholarship
Eligibility
- Entering or current Honors College student with a minimum 3.3 GPA
- In the first generation of their family to complete a college degree (students whose siblings have attained or are pursuing a degree are eligible)
- Resident of the state of Florida
- Enrollment for a minimum of six credit hours per semester
- Have financial need as determined through the FAFSA and be eligible for a Pell Grant
Amount: A one-time award of $1,000
Duration: Not automatically renewable; recipient can re-apply
- The Tony Menendez Computer Scholarship
This scholarship awards a laptop computer with all the pertinent programs, along with IT support from the college’s computer lab staff when needed.
Eligibility
- Freshman enrolled in the Honors College;
- Minimum high school GPA of 3.5 or greater;
- Financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office
The student will keep the assigned laptop if:
- They remain a full-time Honors College student
- Makes a satisfactory progress toward a bachelor’s degree
- Maintains a 3.3 cumulative GPA
- Vidal-Duart First Generation Scholarship
This scholarship is open to first generation Honors College students. Preference will be given to students majoring in Business or Engineering. Recipients must be either an entering or current Honors College student who is in the first generation of their family to complete a college degree. Recipients will be offered internship opportunities at CDR Maguire, Inc.
Eligibility
- Entering or current Honors College student with a minimum 3.3 GPA
- In the first generation of their family to complete a college degree (students whose siblings have attained or are pursuing a degree are eligible);
- Resident of the state of Florida; Degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled for a minimum of six credit hours per semester;
- Demonstrated financial need by completing the national Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and be eligible for a Pell Grant.
- Preference will be given to students majoring in Business or Engineering.
Amount: Varies for Fall/Spring

- Vidal-Duart Scholarship
The scholarship is selected by a committee composed of representatives of the college and CDR Maguire, Inc. Recipients of the Vidal-Duart Scholarship will be chosen principally based on academic performance or potential. Upon receiving the scholarship, the recipient will be offered internship opportunities at CDR Maguire, Inc.
Eligibility
- Entering or current Honors College student with a minimum 3.3 GPA
- Awarded to two Honors College students who are majoring in Business or Engineering.
Amount: Varies for Fall/Spring

- The Vivian and Vanessa Melgoza Scholarship
The Vivian and Vanessa Melgoza scholarship is open to all eligible Honors College students. Students must be either an entering or current Honors College student. Preference will be given to First Generation students.
Eligibility
- Entering or current Honors College student with a minimum 3.3 GPA
- Recipients will be chosen principally based on academic performance or potential;
- Preference will be given to first-generation students. First generation is defined as the first in their family to attain a college degree (students whose siblings have attained or are pursuing a degree are eligible).
Amount: A one-time payment that varies.

- William T. Jerome III Community Service Scholarship
Eligibility
- Honors College Senior (or rising Junior) in good standing (min. 3.3 GPA);
- Evidence of motivation, character and potential through community service; demonstration of an effort to integrate university learning with civic engagement.
- Financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.
Amount: A one-time award of $500
Transfer Students
Transfer Student scholarships are competitive, and only a select number will be awarded each Fall semester. Applications will be available Feb. 6 to April 1. Login to AcademicWorks with your FIU username and password. You must have already activated your FIU e-mail account and have a Panther ID number. Type “Honors College” in the search tab to find the below scholarships.
Eligibility for Honors Scholarships
- Admission and active status in the Honors College
- Maintain minimum enrollment of 15 credits per term
- Complete minimum engagement and service requirements each year
- Students awarded a transfer scholarship may only receive one transfer award per academic year
- Be a citizen of the United States, a U.S. lawful permanent resident or an international student on an aid eligible visa
DACA/TPS/Undocumented students without legal status are not eligible for Federal, State or Institutional Funding
List of Scholarships
- Willis Holcombe Scholarship
Available only to graduates of Broward College, this award covers the full cost of in-state tuition and registration fees. A minimum entering cumulative grade point average of 3.5 is required.
- Eduardo Padron Scholarship
Available only to graduates of Miami Dade College, this award covers the full cost of in-state tuition and registration fees. A minimum entering cumulative grade point average of 3.5 is required.
- Presidential Scholarship
Available to graduates of select Florida community colleges, this award covers the full cost of in-state tuition and registration fees. Students who are interested in this award must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member or administrator from their community college. A minimum entering cumulative grade point average of 3.5 is required.
Applicants from Miami Dade College and Broward College are not eligible for this award.
- FIU / Community College Honors Scholarship
This award provides $1,000 per semester for a maximum of four semesters. A minimum entering cumulative grade point average of 3.3 is required.
- Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship
Each year, one outstanding member of Phi Theta Kappa is awarded $2,000 per year for a maximum of two years. Students who are interested in this award should submit a letter of recommendation from their PTK faculty advisor. A minimum grade point average of 3.3 is required.
- Phi Theta Kappa All-Florida Academic Team Scholarship
his scholarship is available to students who have been identified as a member of the Phi Theta Kappa All-Florida Academic Team and have been accepted into FIU’s Honors College. To be considered for this award, candidates must submit two letters of recommendation, one of which can be from a PTK advisor.
Policies Governing Honors College Scholarships
- FIU/CC Honors and Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships
- Award is available to transfer students holding an AA degree from a Florida community college.
- Students must have completed the A.A. with an overall GPA of at least 3.3 and must have the support of their community college honors director.
- Awards will begin only during the fall semester of each academic year and will not be available during the summer terms.
- All students (except for international students) must submit a current Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the federal processor (available from any community college or university financial aid office).
- Students who without prior approval do not enroll in 15 FIU credits, cease participation in the Honors College or do not maintain at least a 3.3 overall GPA (reviewed annually) will not receive the award and will not be eligible for future support.
- Any appeal of these policies must be made in writing to the College Scholarship Committee. Fall admission required for all scholarship awards.
- Willis Holcombe, Eduardo Padron, Presidential, and Phi Theta Kappa All-Florida Academic Team Scholarships
- Awards are available to students transferring from Florida community colleges (Holcombe: BC only; Padron: MDC only; Presidential and Phi Theta Kappa All-Florida: any)
- Fall admission is required for all scholarship awards.
- Students must have completed the A.A. degree with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 and must have the support of the appropriate community college honors director.
- Awards will cover the full cost of in-state tuition and the health and athletic fees.
- Minimum enrollment is 15 FIU credit hours per term (fall/spring only). Awards will cover a maximum of 15 credits per term.
- Awards will begin only during the fall term of each academic year and will not be available during summer terms.
- Continuation of the award is contingent upon maintaining an overall FIU GPA of at least 3.3 (reviewed annually) and earning a minimum of 30 credits per academic year.
- Recipients must maintain membership at the Honors College.
- All students (except for international students) must submit a current FAFSA (available from any community college or university financial aid office).
