Program Overview
What has France Given the World and to You?
France has a widespread, sustained and continued influence on individual and worldwide scenarios. Such a profound and sometimes unrecognized legacy stems from political, intellectual, linguistic and cultural portions of our lives. In this two-semester course, you experience firsthand the incredible culture and history of France.
In IDH 4007, you will explore French civilization by learning while on campus about France’s history from its beginning to contemporary times, stressing certain periods that will be experienced first-hand upon the summer visit.
In IDH 4008, you will engage directly with the curriculum in person as you navigate Francois I’s Renaissance in the Loire castles, Marie Antoinette’s final trek through Paris to the guillotine, and Hemingway’s walk through the streets of the Latin Quarter. You will engage in debates about absolutism, nationalism, revolution and human rights in the country that saw the most radical, idealistic, and brutal revolution in Europe.

This is a living document, meaning that scheduled Free Time may be utilized for in-person quizzes, class meetings, and/or class days. Students should always consult with their Faculty Director prior to scheduling plans during Free Time.

Your Faculty Director
Dr. Amilcar Castellano-Sanchez has been an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (FIU Medicine) since its inception. Dr. Castellano-Sanchez trained in Anatomic & Clinical Pathology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach and served two additional post-doctoral fellowships in Neuropathology at Emory University in Atlanta and Hematopathology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/University of Saint Louis. His research interests include neoplastic hematologic and non-hematologic diseases, brain tumors and particularly lymphomas in brain tissue.
Beginning Fall 2016, he will be teaching a Global Learning-rated course titled: History of Medicine through Art for the Honors College.
