Program Overview
España: Aquí y Allá – Ayer y Hoy
The storied history of Spain is intertwined with its rich culture; to study it requires focus. This two-semester program engages in an interdisciplinary study of Spanish culture along two axes for students to better understand how Spain has dramatically affected the world.
In IDH 4007, you will study along the first axis, aquí y allá, to look at the ongoing transatlantic dialogue between Spain and the Americas. With an emphasis on Miami in the Spring, the course will focus on the many social and cultural manifestations of this relationship.
In IDH 4008, you will study along the second temporal axis, ayer y hoy, examining the history of Spain by concentrating on four eras and four regions that are significant not only for Spain but also for its influence on the Americas.

Your Faculty Director
Niurca Márquez is a movement artist/researcher and author. As a trained somatic educator, she uses her body-centered work to service communities undergoing processes of healing and self-realization.
A Latinx artist and activist on the margins advocating for silenced voices, she is particularly interested in notions of identity, cultural memory, ritual and the body within a contemporary framework, as well as the multiple layers of communication and understanding in movement practices that lead to liaisons with political and social discourse.
